The scientific center of CESTMed aims to increase knowledge on the biology, ecology and disturbances of sea turtles.
The monitoring of sampling protocols is implemented by the French Mediterranean Sea Turtles Network (RTMMF) on dead and live turtles. Thus the turtles are taken care of by CESTMed and are systematically weighed, measured and photographed. In addition, samples (tissues, blood, epizoites, faeces, bones) are taken and sent to specialized laboratories for analyzes (DNA, stomach contents, skeleton chronology, etc.).
Clinical diagnoses are made on individuals in care. A “pathologies and care” database is regularly updated on the basis of these veterinary examinations. New paragraph
The La Grande Motte rehabilitation center acts as a study laboratory for animal behavior and the testing of new technologies (repellents, telemetry monitoring devices, etc.).
Real players in the conservation of sea turtles, fishermen allow CESTMed and RTMMF to collect information on the circumstances of accidental fishing of sea turtles (places, type of gear involved, etc.), the ecology of the animals and the lesions associated with their capture.
In this perspective, the “In Fishing” project aims to promote the profession of fisherman through a photographic exhibition.
